Photographing my jewelry has been a huge challenge for me. Because my hand made beads are dainty and usually shiny, they get lost and reflect light...which is not good for a flattering picture. This early shot of a bracelet that sold long ago is an exception. The handmade beads are the white and clear ones, which I think contrast well with the cherry quartz chips and the blister pearl medallion.
I wish I knew what I had done right on this picture! I've been told to take pictures outdoors on a sunny day, which I haven't tried yet. Apparently the natural light, and a decent macro option on the camera, really helps. I'll try that some day.
For now, I'm having a hard time just finding the time to make jewelry! I have a bunch made, waiting for Ted to move his Artisan's Collective from Davis Street to the new location in the Bishop Arts District.

I'm a jewelry maker (I make my own glass beads on torch) and I've been nine ways to Sunday with the photography thingie, especially with the high-sheen of fire-polished beads. I will say one thing you need is a light cube (a tent sort of thing which disperses light evenly and keeps shadows from forming) - you can buy one on ebay for around $20, but they'll all be from Asia with a $20 shipping fee.

At Wolf camera for around $120, you can buy a light cube kit which includes a couple free-standing lamps for illuminating the tent from the outside. HOwever, I found that the color of the bulbs they provide are not good for getting true results of the actual colors, so you may have to experiment with combinations of different bulb types in lamps around the tent.

The best light is a bright day but where the sun is completely behind clouds, if that gives you an idea. Hopefully, I didn't put you to sleep with all this.

That bracelet is absoultely gorgeous, by the way!

thanks! I am also a lampwork bead maker!!!! I think I remember seeing that on your blog somewhere or your profile?

I'll try taking shots outside before I go through the scary proposition of going to wolf camera etc (otherwise I'll want to walk out with a 2K camera....)

Like some other people said, REALLY bright indirect light is best. I photograph on our screened in porch when light is at its brightest.
Experiment with the macro function on your camera. (Most digital cameras have one).
Take a TON of pictures.
Also try the portrait setting.

I love handmade things both old and new. I'm easily swayed by anything that is hand stitched, painted, or carved. I want to learn how to do ALL of it. Right now I'm focused mostly on making beads, putting together jewelry with those beads, and repujado. Tomorrow, who knows...
